ANIMATION

Animation Director

A compilation of some of the work I've helped create over the years for clients from Visa to Capital One to Keurig to Bustle.

Work includes motion graphics, character animation and the occasional stop-motion I've done or directed over the years using a mix of Photoshop, After Effects and Adobe Animate.

Please reach for a detailed breakdown of the work.

Visa: Capital One Journey Card

*

Visa: Capital One Journey Card *

A series of short animations created for Visa featuring their new Capital One Journey Card as Associate Motion Design Director at Decoded Advertising.

Working closely with an art director and freelance illustrator, our team of two animated each spot using a combination of Adobe Animate, Illustrator and After Effects to mix both hand-drawn and digitally animated elements. Four 15sec spots in total, the ones I owned from start to finish featured below.

Bonus: animating a cat not once but twice in one campaign!

Decoded: Website Intro

*

Decoded: Website Intro *

One of my first assignments at Decoded Advertising was creating a dynamic animated intro for the company website and it’s still one of my favorites.

The only direction I was given was some very loose style frames spelling out who we were - the first truly integrated creative, tech and media process with the aim of driving better results.

Created entirely in After Effects and built out for both browser and mobile.

Bug Botanist: YouTube Pre-roll

*

Bug Botanist: YouTube Pre-roll *

A series of short animated pre-rolls created for the eco-friendly bug repellant brand Bug Botanist as Animation Director at Decoded Advertising.

Working closely with an art director, copywriter and freelance illustrator, our team of two animated each spot using a combination of Adobe Photoshop and After Effects to mix both hand-drawn and digitally animated elements. Two 15sec spots and one 06sec cut-down were created in total. I animated the entirety of the Wonderfully Weird 15sec and 06sec cut-down as well as overseeing the animation on the Tasteful Mosquito spot.

Key takeaway: eight-legged walk-cycles are exactly 2 times harder than four.

Josh Ritter: Music Video

*

Josh Ritter: Music Video *

A song for that little dog lost in space.

Personal short film set to a song by Josh Ritter. I developed the look and feel, storyboarded and designed all elements in Photoshop and finally animated everything using a mix of Adobe Animate and After Effects.

Keurig: Social Posts

*

Keurig: Social Posts *

A selection of social posts I animated at Decoded Advertising for our client Keurig.

Each post featured one of Keurig’s Green Mountain Coffee Roasters blends - Dark Magic, Blueberry, Pumpkin Spice, etc. Each illustration was then themed around the flavor of coffee. Done by one of our in-house designers, the illustrations were then handed off to me to play with in After Effects. The only restriction was that the motion had to loop seamlessly - everything else was up to me and the timeline!

Particular highlights for me are the mama and baby bear, gondola lift, and sleepy owl.

Night Parade

*

Night Parade *

In honor of the spooky season and my love of all things yokai, I made my own little Night Parade of Hundred Demons. OK, OK - there's only ten... maybe next year I'll hit a hundred.

I illustrated and animate each character in Procreate, moved them into Photoshop to check timing and finally composted them all in After Effects.

Airborne Dual Action: Social Ads

*

Airborne Dual Action: Social Ads *

Animated series of social ads I made for Airborne to promote their Dual Action line of products.

I storyboarded both spots, as well asdesigned and built the characters in Photoshop and After Effects based on the client's pre-existing 3D character designs. I finally animated the entire series in After Effects.

I also helped select music, as well as record and edit all voice-over and sound effects for both spots.

All About Dogs: Short Film

*

All About Dogs: Short Film *

My work-in-progress short mixed-media film All About Dogs, documenting the backstage life and antics of show dogs.

Audio was collected over several visits backstage at various dog shows. Character designs were created and colored using good ol' pen, pencil and, finally, Photoshop.

Next, character animation was done entirely by hand in Adobe Animate, then used as a guide layer in Dragonframe and recreated in clay. Final composite is being done in After Effects using the stop-motion frames layered overtop of footage filmed across various soundstages, dog shows and miniature sets.

From audio to animation to stop motion to sets, I've been chipping away at this film almost single-handedly for the last decade or so.

Grouplove: Music Video

*

Grouplove: Music Video *

Teaser music video for the band Grouplove's track "Raspberry" off their upcoming album Spreading Rumours.

I created the entire animation under the direction of Rose Stark at Ace & Son MPC, LLC entirely in Adobe Animate with some post-production work in After Effects.

Had a lot of fun animating this fella's little eyelashes and the final shot where he heads down the drain.

They Might Be Giants: Music Video

*

They Might Be Giants: Music Video *

The two Johns run in to trouble while pondering that age old question: Why does the sun really shine?

An animated romp for They Might Be Giants for their children's album Here's Comes Science, as seen on the Disney distributed DVD accompanying the album. The tune revisits the band’s previous hit Why Does the Sun Shine? updating the lyrics to reflect scientific discoveries made since the original song was released.

Co-directed and designed with David Cowles. Created with a mix of hand-drawn animation, Photoshop, After Effects and stop-motion courtesy of Hine Mizushima.

Visa Benefit Bites: Social Ads

*

Visa Benefit Bites: Social Ads *

A series of animated social videos - or Benefit Bites - created for Visa Business.

As lead animator at MRY, I helped storyboard each spot as well as create all designs and animations using a combination of Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects.

Kipling: Digital OOH

*

Kipling: Digital OOH *

A series of short stop-motion animations created for Kipling as Lead Animator at MRY.

Each piece was animated under the camera using an assortment of Kipling-brand bags and monkeys, balloons, streamers, patterned paper, etc. The final edits were then compiled in After Effects.

The finished videos were featured on Kipling's Instagram as well as part of Kipling's display in Macy's flagship store at Herald Square for its annual Spring Flower Show.

Nerd vs Geek: Title Sequence

*

Nerd vs Geek: Title Sequence *

I was asked to create a fun, punchy animated title sequence for the web series Nerd vs. Geek.

The concept was to illustrate the never-ending battle between 'nerds' and 'geeks' - a hydrogen atom crushed by a 20-sided die, a zombie squashed by a tyrannosaurus.

I drew, inked and scanned all images to give them a comic book feel, colored in Photoshop and then animated in After Effects using 3D layers and camera effects.
